Juneau residents Lindsey M. Heumann, a senior studying exercise and sport science; Aubrey J. Hulse, a freshman studying general science; and Jennifer A. Olarra, studying for a credential in zoology, were named to Oregon State University's Scholastic Honor Roll for having 3.5 grade-point averages or better during the fall term.
Air Force Airman Erik S. Bickmore has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, core values, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and special training in human relations.
In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate in applied science degree relating through the Community College of the Air Force.
A 2008 graduate of Juneau-Douglas High School, Bickmore is the son of Jade Bickmore of Steep Place, of Juneau.
Rory Darling, of Juneau, is enrolled in a graduate program, Executive Masters of Information Management, at the Syracuse University School of Information Studies. As a result of his outstanding academic record - for maintaining a 4.0 grade-point average, and publishing one of his papers in the May 2008 issue of the "Journal of Enterprise Architecture" - he was recently nominated for and initiated into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, founded in 1897, is the nation's oldest, largest and most selective all-discipline honor society. Membership is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students and 7.5 percent of juniors. The society's mission is "To recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others."
Darling is currently working to receive a master's degree in information management in May 2009 from Syracuse University.
