False mayday warning issued

After having responded to several false distress calls, the Coast Guard is warning people about the dangers of false maydays. Such calls send rescuers into harm's way unnecessarily and pull rescue assets away from potential real emergencies. Under U.S. law, an individual who knowingly and willfully communicates a false distress message may be imprisoned for up to six years, subject to a civil penalty of $5,000 and liable for all costs the Coast Guard incurs as a result of the individual's actions. Parents are reminded that they are responsible for minor children.
