KETCHIKAN - A Ketchikan man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for the beating death of his former friend.

Carl W. Abuhl, 30, was sentenced Friday on his October conviction of second-degree murder for the May 2001 death of Steve Bowen.

During a rambling statement before his sentence was handed down, Abuhl said Bowen deserved to die for dishonoring Abuhl's former girlfriend and threatening Abuhl.

Throughout the trial, the defense admitted Abuhl killed Bowen, 49, at Bowen's home by bludgeoning him with a baseball bat, but said Abuhl had been enraged at the time.
