Juneau will lose a caring jurist when Judge Peter B. Froehlich retires from the bench. Froehlich kindly put up with and encouraged me, a summer intern, when I practiced before him last summer. In my short career, I've seen judges in Alaska, Nevada, Washington, D.C., and Florida. Froehlich is among the best.
He always did his best to do what is right, specifically by focusing on the substance abuse problems lying at the root of many crimes that came before him. He admirably tried to break from convention and seek new approaches to the seemingly permanent problem of substance abuse. But as we all know, these sorts of innovations are the only way that progress can be made.
His shoes will be difficult to fill, and not just because of his large feet.
