Former Sitka resident and state Sen. H.D. "Pete" Meland died Jan. 2, 2003.
Meland was born March 21, 1919, in Postville, Iowa, to Peter and Mabel Meland. He settled in Sitka in 1941. His family described him as a prominent Alaska businessman who was active in politics, serving on the Sitka City Council and spending a decade in office as an Alaska senator. He and his present wife, Marian, left Alaska in 1982 and traveled extensively. They lived briefly in Iowa, Florida, Arizona and Hawaii before settling in the Roseburg area of Oregon in 1989.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorraine. He is survived by two sisters, Irene Sloan of Crestwell, Ore., and Burnetta Peterson of Ramona, Calif.; one son, David Meland of Seattle, Wash.; stepchildren Michael Cramer of Myrtle Creek, Ore., Frank Cramer of Fallon, Mont., and Carolyn Robinson of Sutherlin, Ore.; stepgrandchildren Shasta Gish, Russell Cramer, Rebecca Cramer and Keith Cramer; two great-grandchildren, Seirra Cramer and Cecilia Greene; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services are planned for 2 p.m. Jan. 11 at Faith Lutheran Church in Roseburg.
