Juneau resident Ryan B. Elisoff, 27, died unexpectedly on Jan. 3, 2005, at the Bartlett Regional Hospital emergency room.
He was born Dec. 17, 1977, in Juneau, raised here and attended the Juneau schools. He recently attended Seattle ITT Tech to study video program design. His Tlingit name was Aayaax, named after his maternal great-great-uncle (Samuel G. Johnson). He is of the Deisheetaan clan, from Yeil Hit (Raven House) in Angoon and Wooshkeetaan yadi (child of his father's clan).
He was very artistic and enjoyed music, which was a big part of his life, and was passionate and very competitive when it came to playing basketball and video games with family and friends, his family said. His main interest later in life involved re-discovering his Tlingit heritage and culture.
His family says, "Family was extremely important to him and raising his two sons was his main priority as he was a very involved father and maternal uncle."
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, John Elisoff and an aunt, Carrie Austin.
Ryan is survived by his mother, Donelle Everson and stepfather, Dermott Howard; father, Jeffrey Elisoff; fiancée, Clarissa Paulo; sons, Seth and Ezra Elisoff; step-daughter, Brittney Rivera; sisters, Erica and Alexa Elisoff; brother, James Elisoff; step-brother, Aaron Howard; step-sisters, Rebekah and Tamara Howard; maternal grandparents, Murlin and Selina Everson; aunts and uncles, Catrina and Duff Mitchell, Patricia Everson, Mark Everson, Michael Everson and Michael's partner JoAnn Bollman; his paternal grandmother, Gertrude Peters; aunts and uncles, John Austin, David Austin, Lester Davis, Joni Roberts, Jackie House, Patrick Elisoff, Rose Peters, Earl Peters Jr., Larrisa Peters, Lydia Peters, Tina Peters and Starla Williams. Maternal nieces and nephew are, Donelle Coronell, Selena Walker and John Elisoff; and numerous cousins in Alaska and Washington.
A traditional Tlingit memorial service will be held at the Juneau ANB Hall at 5:30 p.m., on Monday, Jan. 10 with a dinner following the service. Interment will occur in the spring.
