Church computer seizure will bring no charges

SITKA — Sitka police say an investigation of computers seized from St. Gregory’s Catholic Church will result in no charges against a former priest.

Lt. Barry Allen tells the Daily Sitka Sentinel that no material found on the computers would be deemed illegal. He says the case is closed.

The Diocese of Juneau had called Sitka police when computer monitoring software alerted church officials to a possible child pornography offense. Sitka police seized the computers Nov. 16 and they were analyzed in Anchorage.

The Rev. Edmund Penisten was removed from the church and resigned later that month.
