Juneau-Douglas Ice Association registration - Youth hockey for players ages 5-18, learn-to-skate lessons and figure skating registration will take place from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8, and from 1-9 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Nugget Mall. The youth hockey season will from from Feb. 1 through April 15. It is open to experienced skaters and non-skaters (skating lessons will be offered to non-skaters), and players will be divided according to ability. The youth hockey registration fee is $95, which includes membership in USA Hockey and insurance. Youth hockey teams will get two hours of ice time each week. The learn-to-skate program if for anybody age 5-older who wants to improve their skating skills. The $50 fee includes a one-hour lesson each week for five weeks. The figure skating program is for experienced skaters who can skate securely on one foot, turn using crossover strides and stop without using toe picks. Skaters without those skills should sign up for the learn-to-skate program. The $50 figure skating fee includes a one-hour lesson each week. 4-H Nordic Ski Club - The fifth year of this club for youth and adult skiers will meet every Sunday afternoon from Jan. 12 through March 16 at various locations TBA with club leaders Odin Brudie and Frankie Pillifant ($6 membership fee). The club has a limited number of pairs of classic and skating ski sets for rent for $20 for the entire winter season. Club leaders will help parents size skis for their children. The club only rents youth skis, adults must provide their own. If families couldn't attend the Dec. 14 registration meeting, they should call the 4-H office and enroll by phone. Juneau Adult Hockey Association registration - Registration for the upcoming Juneau Adult Hockey Association season will close on Jan. 14. Players who have already signed up will be receiving registration packets that must be returned with payment by Jan. 14. The JAHA will be hosting a final open house for players to register and submit payments from 5-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14, in the Egan Room of Centennial Hall. The two-tiered JAHA league will have one division for beginners with some hockey experience, while the other division will be for more-experienced players. Both divisions will be non-contact coed leagues. Players must be at least 18 years old, have some hockey experience and be fully equipped to start playing in late January. Individuals younger than age 18 may be considered for the league based on experience. So far, 140 players have registered, more than twice the number anticipated for the inaugural season of recreational hockey at the new Treadwell Arena. HoopTime basketball tryouts - HoopTime AAU basketball tryouts will be held this Thursday, Friday and Saturday. All sessions are at the Mt. Jumbo Gym in Douglas. Boys in grades 5-6 should meet from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9. Boys in grades 7-8 will meet from 8 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10. Girls in grades 5-6 should meet from 4:30-6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11. Girls in grades 7-8 should meet from 6-7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11. Travel teams and development teams are forming. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation coed volleyball registration - Team manager packets are available at the Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation office downtown, Room 218 of the Municipal Building, 155 S. Seward Street. Team registration takes place in the Assembly Chambers, on the main floor of the Municipal Building, at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9. Late registration will be taken on Friday, Jan. 10, at the Parks and Rec office (a $10 late fee will be charged). Teams will be accepted on a space-available basis only. Southeast Road Runners club annual potluck/awards banquet - Meet at the Gastineau (DIPAC) Hatchery Reception Hall at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11. This event is open to all runners and is highlighted by a potluck dinner, Empire Cup awards, a slide show from the 2002 season and a brief annual meeting to elect new officers.
