Race not an important candidates' issue

Here is my question. Sen. Barack Obama had a white mother and a black father, which, in my way of thinking, means he is 50 percent white and 50 percent black.

However, Obama is always referred to as the "black candidate." So in fairness, should half the time he be referred to as the white candidate, or is it time not to mention race but only the candidates' positions on the issues of importance to all Americans?
