With $2.87 and up for fuel oil and Alaska Electric Light and Power's high winter rates, the city's announcement that it's going to re-instate the burn ban is just one more stab in the back for people trying to make ends meet.
Sound off on the important issues at
I know there are some families out there that can't afford a $1,200 fuel oil bill or a $200 electric bill. Their only option is to burn wood to keep their home warm. There are exceptions to every rule. I truly believe the city of Juneau and the Environmental Protection Agency should look at an exception for this during the 10 to 20 days a year it might happen.
Won't the city and the EPA be proud of themselves if they let a family with children suffer in the cold because they can't afford fuel oil or a $1,000 fine for burning their wood stove during the coldest part of the year.
