Hollis gets expanded ferry service
JUNEAU - In an effort to provide additional service to the communities on Prince of Wales Island, the Alaska Marine Highway System has added a new link from Hollis to Ketchikan, debuting the evening of Jan. 10.
The vessel Aurora will make the stops, resulting in four port calls in Hollis during the week of Jan. 10 and three port calls during the week of Jan. 17.
``We looked at the schedule and did everything we could to try to provide more service for Prince of Wales Island without severely impacting other communities of Southeast Alaska,'' said Port Captain George Capacci.
The Hollis stops will stretch thin vessel availability, due to maintenance work on marine highway vessels planned for the winter season.
The ferry LeConte will start a major, four-month maintenance period on Jan. 11. Federal funds will be used to replace aging main engines, generators and associated switchboard and other equipment.
After completion of its maintenance work in early February, the ferry Taku will take its turn providing additional service to Prince of Wales.
