NEW CALENDAR ITEMS

• Alaska Department of Fish & Game hunter education instructor training - A training course for volunteer hunter education instructors will be held on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 21-22, at the indoor shooting range on Montana Creek Road. Classes will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Jan. 21 and from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Jan. 22. Those interested in taking the course are required to complete a background check with the Alaska State Troopers before starting. The checks can be completed, with two forms of identification required (one with picture), at 2760 Sherwood Lane or 450 Whittier Street on weekdays from 8 a.m.-noon or 1-4 p.m. The $20 fee will be reimbursed. • Indoor shooting range closure - The indoor shooting range on Montana Creek Road will be closed to the public on Saturday, Jan. 21, until 3 p.m. due to hunter education instructor training.

• Juneau Ski Club - Winterfest Series giant slalom: This event is for J4-M skiers at Eaglecrest Ski Area and will take place if there's enough snow. Times are TBA. MEETINGS / CLINICS / ANNOUNCEMENTS

• HoopTime Basketball signup - Openings are available on most teams for the middle-school league, which begins practicing the week of Jan. 3 and runs through spring break. The sixth-grade girls team is the only team with a full roster. Applications will be accepted through Friday, Jan. 14, and can be found on the Web at http://www.juneau.com/hooptime/index.html. • Juneau-Douglas High School youth indoor soccer mini camp - Youth soccer players ages 5-13 are invited to join JDHS players for the seventh annual Indoor Soccer Mini Camp on Monday, Jan. 17 - Martin Luther King Jr. Day - at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. The camp runs from 9 a.m.-noon (registrayion 8:45 a.m.) for ages 5-8, and 1-4 p.m. (registration 12:45 p.m.) for ages 8-13, with an advanced session available. The camp costs $25, with proceeds going to the JDHS soccer program. Players should bring a snack and water bottle - but no soccer balls - and come dressed to play indoor soccer. • Eaglecrest Ski Area January activities - January is "Discover Eaglecrest Month" at Eaglecrest Ski Area. In addition to a full slate of ski and snowboard classes, special events include: Ski Patrol Avalanche Awareness Day on Jan. 15; Nordic Skate Power and Conditioning six-week program starting on Jan. 15; Juneau Ski Club races, snow conditions permitting, on Jan. 16, 22-23 and 27-31; "Gals Get Up and Go," a four-week learn-to-ski program for adult women starting on Jan. 22; and the 24th Annual Subaru Learn to Ski Weekend on Jan. 29-30. OPEN GYMS / SCRIMMAGES / ONGOING

• Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - New climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. • Juneau Community Schools open gyms - Basketball, volleyball and soccer open gyms for adults are available several times a week. Basketball and volleyball open gyms are held Fridays and Sundays from 7-9 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Soccer open gyms are held Saturdays from 6-8 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School and Sundays from 6:45-8:45 p.m. at Floyd Dryden Middle School. The cost is $5 per session, and 10-session punchcards are available for $40 each. Info: Juneau Community Schools, 463-1717.

• Recreational badminton - Auke Bay group: This group meets from 8-10 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Auke Bay Community School gym. This badminton open gym is for teens and adults of all skill levels and it costs $3 per person per night. Bring a racquet, if you have one. Info: Theresa Walden, 790-2499.
