Painted lane markers should be maintained

Posted: Wednesday, January 09, 2008

The deterioration of white and yellow painted lane markers on Juneau's paved roads has become a significant contributor to accidents and the slowing of traffic flow, especially during conditions of reduced visibility.

Sound off on the important issues at

I had wrongly assumed that re-striping would take place during last season's good weather.

Now, of course it is impossible. But it should be scheduled as soon as weather permits. Major intersections with multiple turn lanes should have top priority.

A prime example is the complex intersection of Mall Road, Riverside Drive and Vintage Boulevard, with 15 lanes of traffic from four directions and eight pedestrian crossings. The lane markings are invisible. Unless a driver is already familiar with where the through and turn lanes are supposed be, it is impossible to navigate properly.

This problem is especially serious for older drivers with reduced night vision.
