Sitka welcomes Chaix, first baby of 2009

SITKA - Chaix Ernestine Cynthia Speerstra Mooney was the first baby of 2009 born at the SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium Mount Edgecumbe Hospital in Sitka.

Chaix, pronounced "Shay," was born at 12:07 p.m. Jan. 3. Her parents are Linda Speerstra and Phil Mooney of Sitka. Chaix weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces, and she was 19 inches long at birth. Chaix was delivered by Dr. Don Lehmann of Sitka Medical Center.

Chaix has three brothers, Jason Nuñez Mooney, Nicholaas Perkins and Anthony Perkins. She also has two sisters, Brenna Mooney and Maryke Speerstra Mooney. Her grandparents are Mary and Ted Schwindt of Woodland, Wash., and Ernestine Mooney of Boise, Idaho. Chaix is named for the Chaix Hills on Malaspina Glacier, near Icy Bay and Yakutat. Her middle name Ernestine honors her grandmother, and Cynthia honors an aunt who died of cancer.

As the first baby of the new year born at Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital, Chaix and her parents received several special gifts from local businesses. The donated gifts included a variety of baby supplies and numerous gift certificates.
