Posted: Monday, January 10, 2000

Juneau's Joe Tompkins skied to a pair of silver medals at the Huntsman Cup Disable Ski Races Jan. 4-6 in Park City, Utah.

With occasional blowing snow, Tompkins navigated the second giant slalom of the three-day event in one minute, 29.86 seconds. Tompkins finished the slalom in 1:42.83 for his second silver medal of the event.

Chris Waddell of Granby, Mass., won both the GS (1:25.97) and slalom (1:39.02).

Tompkins, 31, competes in the mono-ski division for Disabled World Cup events. He is training for the World Disabled Championships later this month in Anzere, Switzerland.

A car accident in 1988 left Tompkins paralyzed from the waist down. He began ski racing in 1996.
