Poster contest focuses on ski safety

The Eaglecrest Ski and Snowboard School is sponsoring a poster contest for students ages 5-12 in honor of the National Ski Areas Association's Safety Awareness Week.

Entrants should use the skier's responsibility code to inspire their artwork. Posters will be judged on best overall message and creativity. Students should use pencil, crayon, paint or other similar materials (no macaroni) in their posters.

Prizes will be awarded in the 5-6, 7-9 and 10-12 age groups. Winning posters will be submitted to a national contest, with possible publication in "Ski" magazine.

Posters must be submitted by Jan. 31, with winners announced Feb. 3.

Northrip to discuss media in Croatia

Charlie Northrip, a former Juneau resident, will give a free public talk on "Growing Democracy Through Media in Croatia" at 6 p.m. Thursday on the second floor of the Dimond Court Building. A reception will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Northrip is helping set up a national radio news agency in Zagreb. He previously headed KTOO-FM and the Alaska Broadcasting Commission.

Community Schools registration next week

Community Schools will hold registration for winter and spring classes from Jan. 14-19, with classes filled on a first-come first-served basis.

Registration will be from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Nugget Mall, from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Floyd Dryden Middle School and Juneau-Douglas High School, and from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 16-19 at the Community Schools office at Harborview School.

Payment can be made by check, credit card or cash. No registrations will be accepted prior to Jan. 14.

Schedules can be obtained at public libraries, the city Parks and Recreation office or the Community Schools office.

UAS seeking student housing

The University of Alaska Southeast is seeking apartments or room rentals for spring semester college students and families.

Student housing for males and families is full, with only a few remaining spaces for women, said UAS Housing Director Tish Griffin. The semester begins Jan. 16.

Those with rental space near the Auke Lake campus or in the Mendenhall Valley are asked to call the UAS housing office at 465-6528. Listings will be posted on the campus Renters Board.

Applications for Mrs. Juneau International competition sought

Applications are being accepted for the title of Mrs. Juneau International, which will be presented at the University of Alaska Arts Building Auditorium on May 12.

The winner will represent Alaska at the Mrs. International Pageant in Virginia. Competitions will include interview, aerobic wear and evening gown.

Southeast Alaska caves focus of Fireside Program at glacier

The Mendenhall Glacier Visitors Center will host a Fireside Program from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Friday titled Prehistory and Paleoecology of Southern Southeast Alaska Caves.

The presentation by U.S. Forest Service geologist Jim Baichtal will focus on studies conducted of caving systems since 1990. A slide show appropriate for all ages will be featured.
