The Rev. Michael Spainhoward of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox church holds a cross Sunday at the church during Orthodox Christmas services. The Russian Orthodox Church, like some other Orthodox churches, observed Christmas on Jan. 7 because it retained the Julian calendar for its liturgical schedule when countries switched to the Gregorian calendar.
