ANCHORAGE - A former Dillingham dog catcher has been charged in the starvation deaths of six dogs at the city-run pound.
Prosecutors on Thursday filed a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty against 23-year-old Zebulon Travis Barnett.
The six dogs were the entire dog population of the shelter. They were found dead Dec. 8 after police received a tip and a city employee noticed no dog tracks leading to and from the animal shelter.
A veterinarian said the dogs had been left to fend for themselves for four to six weeks and died from dehydration, starvation and in one case hypothermia.
