Every year during the holidays Juneau residents rise to the occasion to help out those less fortunate with gifts and needed food. But although the holidays are over, the need for food isn't.
It's a traditional problem for groups like the Southeast Alaska Food Bank, which routinely see drops in donations after Christmas. Demand also appears to be greater this year than in past ones, according to food bank board members.
Demand is especially great for canned and packaged goods that won't spoil, as well as kid favorites like peanut butter and jelly, macaroni and cheese, soup and canned fruit.
In an effort to help out these vital organizations, the Juneau Empire will be holding a food drive here at Channel Drive. We're asking people to bring in at least six non-perishable food items.
As a bonus, if you sign up for a six-month daily subscription or renew or upgrade an existing account, we'll extend your subscription free for six weeks. Our drive starts on the 15th and will run through Feb. 14.
It's our way of trying to help out these important groups, while at the same time saying thanks to you.
