Eaglecrest opens part of mountain to hikers

Ptarmigan lift remains closed for repairs

Posted: Sunday, January 11, 2009

Hike-to terrain at Eaglecrest Ski Area might be open this weekend, depending on the stability of the snow, ski area officials announced Friday.

"As long as the snow stays stable, skiers and boarders will be allowed to hike up Williwaw to the Eagle's Nest. From there, they can ski the entire mountain with the exception of the Ridge, West Bowl and the East Bowl Chutes," the ski area said in a statement. The East Bowl Chute was open Saturday, but its availability today will depend on slope conditions.

"Attendance was good today and we had many people hiking to the top of the mountain," Eaglecrest General Manager Kirk Duncan said Saturday.

If conditions change, access to the upper mountain will be limited. Check www.skijuneau.com for updates.

Staff confirmed Friday that the bearings on the top bull-wheel on the Ptarmigan lift failed. The bull-wheel will be replaced over the next week with one from the Black Bear chairlift. The lift will be closed for those repairs until Saturday, Jan. 17.

Hooter and Platter lifts will be open during normal operating hours. Lift tickets cost $33.

Customers who purchased a multi-day pass who are leaving town in the next week will receive credit for next season for the remaining visits on their card, the area said. Season pass holders will not receive any credit.
