The Snow Sports School at Eaglecrest Ski Area helps children learn how to ski and snowboard, slope etiquette, and, if so inclined, work toward moving into the upper level racing with the Juneau Ski Club. Programs start at Wee Ski for 3- to 5-year-olds, and progress to Mighty Mites, Race Rats and Mountain Explorers.
"Who knows, we may have another Hilary Lindh out here," instructor David McMaster said. "The kids like going fast, being with friends and being out in the mountains."
Youth are taught not only how to ski, but they also learn a little about the environment and the mountain lifestyle.
"They get an opportunity to explore the mountains," instructor Beth Weigel said. "They learn to ski with other people and to be respectful of each others' space."
Ella Goldstein, 7, said she participates in the program because, "I just like going fast."
