Caroline “Babe” J. Paddock-Odell

Posted: Tuesday, January 11, 2011

Caroline “Babe” J. Paddock-Odell, a longtime resident of Pelican, lost her battle to breast cancer Nov. 20, 2010. Babe was born in Juneau on Aug. 25, 1949, to Joseph and Elizabeth Paddock. Babe is the daughter of the Sockeye Clan Tlukaax.adi, her Tlingit name is Waash Tlaa and she is Sheetka Kaagwaantaan from the Big Box House of Sitka.

Babe would easily claim her greatest accomplishment was the birth of her girls, Tara and Bradelle, affectionately nicknamed Goose and Pickle. Babe married the love of her life Claude K. Odell on Feb. 25, 1995 and made their home in Pelican with her youngest daughter Bradelle and their very treasured dogs Tahoe, Daffie, and Sparky. She was a lover of family outings and walked with a quiet and humble spirit that translated into an open door to anyone who needed an ear or a belly-warming meal.

As Business Manager for Pelican Schools she kept the books in check but her true pleasures came in helping expand the computer lab and anything “tech” related. Babe’s level of dedication for the school was confirmed when she continued to work from Seattle while undergoing chemotherapy longer than we all thought possible; she worked until her eyes and body no longer allowed her to do so.

Caroline J. Paddock-Odell is preceded in death by her parents Joe and Elizabeth Paddock, sister Vivian Max, brother Charles “Snuffy” Paddock, and daughter Pippi Padon. She is survived by brother William Paddock of Juneau, husband Claude K. Odell of Pelican, mother-in-law Henriette Odell of Sitka, daughters Tara Padon and Bradelle Padon of Washington, step-daughter Kim Odell of Juneau, step-son Shayne Odell of Oregon and her grandchildren Chaz Padon, Jessie Suko, Mason Goodson, Tyne Andrews, Dylan Andrews, Calista Odell and Chatham Odell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life party is being planned for June of 2011 in Pelican. Please come prepared to laugh, dance, cry and celebrate the life of our mom, granny, honey, sweetie, sister, auntie, and best friend. As the time draws near a more official announcement will be made.

Pallbearers are Billy Joe Paddock, Joseph Paddock, Dennis M. Houston and Shayne Odell. Honorary pallbearers are Henriette Odell, Jane Shannon, Linda Carson, Royda Breseman, Victo Stepanenko, Jerry Moy and Royce Mattson.

In lieu of flowers we ask that you consider donating money toward cancer research. Babe’s daughter Bradelle is raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society; you may donate online by visiting her website at: http://pages.teamintraining.org/wa/lavatri11/bpadon or mailing a check to LLS Bradelle Padon 2314 E. Ward St. Seattle, WA 98112.

Condolences may be mailed to Claude K. Odell at P.O. BOX 616, Pelican, AK 99832.
