ANCHORAGE — A little-known musher beat Lance Mackey in the Copper Basin 300 — considered a tune up for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in March.
The Anchorage Daily News says 24-year-old Jake Berkowitz from Chugiak crossed the finish line in Paxson Monday morning at 11:46 a.m., more than an hour before Mackey, who has won the Iditarod four consecutive times.
However, the young upstart won’t be a threat to Mackey in this year’s Iditarod. That’s because he isn’t entered. Berkowitz says he’s focusing on winning middle-distance races for now.
