KODIAK — The vice president of an Alaska search and rescue unit in Kodiak has drowned after breaking through thin ice while skating near his house.

KMXT-FM in Kodiak reports the body of 40-year-old Kerry Felton was recovered Monday morning from Island Lake by an Alaska State Troopers dive team.

Felton was reported missing by his wife Sunday night after he failed to return from skating with friends. He apparently had left the group to skate on his own before he disappeared.

Felton was vice president of Kodiak Island Search and Rescue. Friends said Felton helped many people over the years in his role as a search and rescue volunteer.
