Helen L. Fisher

Former Juneau resident and longtime Alaskan Helen L. Fisher died Jan. 11, 2000, at her home in Soldotna.

She was born April 11, 1929, in Lewiston, Idaho, the only child of Louise and Lyle Shaw. She moved to Anchorage in 1953 to teach, and taught there for nearly a decade before moving to the Kenai Peninsula, where she lived for almost 15 years.

She taught at Kenai Peninsula College, and was the first employee of the Kenai Chamber of Commerce in the late 1960s.

In 1981 she moved to Juneau and worked for the Alaska Department of Education in the correspondence division. She also served as an aide to Alaska legislators and legislative committees for 10 sessions. In 1995 she moved to Soldotna.

She was an active participant in her communities. She served on community boards, and helped organize the Kenai Community Care Center for troubled youths and the Mental Health Organization, which prompted the founding of the Women's Resource and Crisis Center. She later served as director for the women's center and secured substantial grants for the programs. She was also president of Kenai Garden Club.

Her husband wrote that her witty remarks will be missed by her family and the people she contacted. She led a very full life and had many careers.

She was married to James E. Fisher for 39 years. She is survived by her daughter Sally Tachick (and Steve) of Soldotna, son Bruce Fisher of Kenai, grandchildren Shane and Spencer Tachick of Soldotna, adjunct son Cory J. Mann of Juneau and several cousins om the Pacific Northwest.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Soldotna Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to AWARE, P.O. Box 20809, Juneau, AK, 99802.
