FAIRBANKS — A Fort Wainwright man who threatened to kill his wife has been sentenced to 10 years in prison with six years suspended in a plea agreement.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that 28-year-old Jamaar Rabime Brown pleaded guilty in August to felony assault and misdemeanor counts of assault and violating a domestic violence protective order.

Brown initially faced charges of attempted murder and kidnapping.

A judge cited the lack of a serious criminal record and letters of support from former college professors and a one-time Army commander during a sentencing hearing Monday in Fairbanks.

The commander noted that, while deployed to Iraq several years ago, Brown had witnessed the deaths of several other servicemen and civilians.
