JDHS takes third at Lady T-Bird Classic

Bears outscore East 38-15 in the second half

The Juneau-Douglas High School team rebounded from a Friday loss to beat host East Anchorage 57-44 on Saturday in the third-place game of the Lady T-Bird Classic in Anchorage.

The Crimson Bears (3-5) finished third in the tournament for the third consecutive year.

JDHS received a balanced scoring effort in the win as three players scored more than 10 points. Mahlet Tingley led the Bears with 13 points while Brittany Fenumiai and Nicole Fenumiai had 11 points each.

Juneau trailed by as much as 29-19 in the second half but outscored East 38-15 in the second half to win the game.

"One of the things they did well in the second half was they took the ball to the basket and got to the free throw line," JDHS coach Lesslie Knight said.

JDHS made 15 of 24 free throw attempts in the win.

Jazzie Gaddy led the Thunderbirds with 15 points and 10 rebounds. She was 6 of 13 from the field in the defeat.

Nicole Fenumiai enjoyed a solid all-around game in the win. In addition to 11 points, she led the team with five rebounds, hit a 3-pointer and made 4 of 6 free throws.

"The lead went back and forth until the final minutes," said Knight.

On Friday, Juneau-Douglas lost 49-43 to Palmer in the semifinal round.

Freshman Taylor Larson led the team with 12 points while Tingley and Kayla Harrison had 11 points each.

JDHS trailed 18-15 at halftime and 36-29 after three quarters.

Palmer made 11 of 15 shots from inside the 3-point arc in the second half to keep JDHS at bay.

Brittany Fenumiai made the all tournament team while Nicole Fenumiai won the free throw team. Also, Harrison, Dierick and Brakes all made the all-academic team with 4.0 GPAs.

Juneau-Douglas opens Southeast Conference play next weekend with two games at Sitka.
