Awards, honors and other accomplishments

Army National Guard Pvt. Jenny E. Miller, a 1998 graduate of Hoonah High School, has entered basic military training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Air Force Airman Adam L. Schubert, son of Gary G. Schubert of Haines, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

Todd Denton and Galen Newton of Juneau, and Geneva Slaughter of Sitka, were among the 43 Alaskans who made the President's or Dean's lists at Montana State University-Bozeman for the fall 1999 semester.

Petty Officer Second Class Lionel K. Apiki was recently selected by the 17th Coast Guard District Commander as the Juneau Area Coast Guard Enlisted Person of the Quarter for the period from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31. Apiki is assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter Liberty as the ship's cook and food service officer. He also served as project officer for the Liberty's 1999 Food and Blanket drive.

Amber Shows, who is studying biological sciences at Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz., was named to the Dean's List for the most recent semester with a 4.0 GPA.

Kara Lindley, a 1999 JDHS graduate, earned a 4.0 GPA and was named to the President's List at Oregon Institute of Technology for the fall quarter of 1999. Lindley is a pre-med major.

Arnold Albrecht recently received the Pacific Northwest Professional Honor Award from the U.S. Forest Service, the agency's highest award given to a professional in the Pacific Northwest by the National Recreation and Park Association. Albrecht has been an employee of the Forest Service for more than 37 years. He currently works in the wildlands recreation management section of the Alaska Regional Office in Juneau.

Jonathan Shane Rear, an Eastern New Mexico University student from Juneau, is among the 489 students on the 1999 fall semester Dean's Honor Roll. He is a technology composite major.
