Despite cancer battle, Hawker in Juneau for session

JUNEAU — An Alaska lawmaker says his prostate cancer could be in remission this spring.

Anchorage Republican Mike Hawker has been battling what he’s called a very aggressive cancer. Last year, he said, doctors told him he faced “an extremely limited life term.”

But in a letter to colleagues, he said a reassessment at the Mayo Clinic showed he appeared to have a “quite serious case of a very aggressive, but more normal, prostate cancer.”

He said he was moved from “totally debilitating” chemotherapy to hormone therapy.

The 54-year-old said he won’t know for months how well the new treatment is working but said he has “every indication” he could be in remission this spring.

Hawker is in Juneau for next week’s start of the legislative session.
