City to meet with cruise industry

JUNEAU - City officials plan to meet with cruise industry executives in Seattle on Friday, Mayor Sally Smith said.

The one-day meeting is to discuss Juneau's long-range tourism plan and to work on relations between the city and the industry, Smith said. In the past, the city has been criticized for not discussing concerns with industry officials, she said.

The mayor, Planning and Policy Committee Chairman Dale Anderson and Deputy City Manager Donna Pierce will make the trip. Representatives from the North West CruiseShip Association, Holland America, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean are scheduled to attend, as are consultants working on the city's tourism plan.

The city is now considering five scenarios in a long-range tourism plan that will help determine Juneau's tourism future. "We'll probably get back and make recommendations to the Assembly," Smith said. "We don't want to hold up the consultants any longer.

Travel costs from Juneau should be about $900 a person, Smith said. "It's not inexpensive, but if it saves us making costly mistakes, it's an investment," she said.
