The Juneau-Douglas High School girls basketball team is ranked fifth and the Crimson Bear boys are sixth among Class 4A schools in the first Alaska Media High School Basketball Poll of the 2003-04 season, released today.
The Chugiak girls and Bartlett boys claimed the top spots in Class 4A in the poll, which is compiled by the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.
Undefeated Chugiak was a unanimous choice among girls teams, earning all nine first-place votes for 45 points, followed by Lathrop (29), Wasilla (20) and East Anchorage (11). The Juneau girls received eight points.
The Bartlett boys earned seven first-place votes and 40 points, followed by East Anchorage (one first-place vote, 35 points), West Anchorage (one first-place vote, 32), Lathrop (19) and Kenai (5). The Juneau boys received three points.
In Class 3A, the Valdez boys and girls occupy the top spots - the boys by unanimous vote. The Metlakatla boys (third) and Petersburg girls (tied for fifth) are the top Southeast teams.
The Cook Inlet Academy boys and Ninilchik girls teams are first in the Class 2A polls, with Ninilchik getting a unanimous vote. The defending state champion Hydaburg boys (second) and Skagway girls (sixth) are the top Southeast teams in the poll.
In Class 1A, the Mountain Village girls and Noorvik boys lead the poll. There are no Class 1A teams in Southeast.
