The Klondike awakens

Posted: Friday, January 16, 2004

Smoke in the air makes it seem as though the boilers of the sternwheeler Klondike have come to life on a crisp morning earlier this month in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. But, alas, the boat - one of the last of its kind - remains aground on the banks of the Yukon River, as it has been for decades. It serves as a museum and is undergoing restoration work. The haze in the air is but a smokescreen, created by the homes and businesses of the city's Riverdale neighborhood.

The pilothouse of the sternwheeler Klondike looks out on the Yukon River earlier this month in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. The boat was decorated in red, white and blue lights for the holiday season.
