Chez Alaska Cooking School to host hands-on class this Saturday

JUNEAU - Chez Alaska Cooking School will hold a three-hour hands-on class with featured chef Derrick Snyder from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Chez Alaska Cooking School, 2092 Jordan Ave., two doors down from ACS in the Nugget Mall annex.
Participants will make pasta with a hand-crank machine. They will then have a hearty lunch, featuring ravioli, fettuccine and spaghetti.

Sealaska accepts applications for college, voc-tech scholarships
JUNEAU - Sealaska Heritage Institute is accepting applications for the 2008-2009 school year.
Scholarship awards will be made to Sealaska shareholders and descendants enrolled in accredited college, university and voc-tech schools.
The scholarship funds awarded are provided by Sealaska Corporation from an endowment and corporate 7 (i) sharing provisions established under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.
The institute also will award one scholarship from the Judson L. Brown Endowment Fund, which was founded in 2006 by Chris and Mary McNeil.

Training program seeks Alaskans 55 and older looking for work
JUNEAU - Mature Alaskans Seeking Skills Training program - an adult education and employment program at The Learning Connection - is seeking people 55 or older who are looking for work.
By expanding on past job experience or developing new skills, MASST assists lower-income, mature Alaskans, those 55 and older, with on-the-job skills training, job search assistance, and placement into employment.
Participants have the opportunity to learn or improve computer skills and to brush up on basics such as reading, writing and math. In today's competitive job market, the MASST program delivers unique training for mature Alaskans to gain additional skills, launch a new career and secure a part-time or full-time job - all while getting paid.

American Red Cross to hold instructor training course
JUNEAU - The American Red Cross will hold an instructor training course from 5:30 to 10 p.m. tonight and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at the American Red Cross of Alaska, 3200 Hospital Drive, No. 203.
The fundamentals of instructor training course includes the history of the American Red Cross and basic principles of teaching.
Pre-requisites to the instructor course is is the Adult CPR/AED with Infant, Child CPR and First Aid classes. These prerequisite classes were held Monday and Tuesday evening. Participants must pass the instructor pre-course exam and sucessfully demonstrate skills without any instruction from the instructor trainer.

The Learning Connection offers Juneau Construction Academy
JUNEAU - The Learning Connection, along with the state of Alaska and various trade organizations, is proud to sponsor the Juneau Construction Academy, which will offer free carpentry, drywall finishing, plumbing and heating, and welding classes starting in February.
Deadline for applications is Friday, Jan. 18.
All classes take place at nights or on weekends. Participants must be over 18, can earn college credit, and will be offered free job placement assistance that can lead to apprenticeships and/or jobs in the construction industry.
