JUNEAU - A day-long Bulgarian folk dance workshop with Daniela Ivanova will be held next Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Marie Drake gymnasium. The workshop, sponsored by the Juneau International Folkdancers, will consist of four sessions: 10-11 a.m., 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m., 2-3 p.m. and 3:15-4:30 p.m. Cost is $10 per session or $35 for the entire day.
An accomplished, professional folk dance teacher and performer, Ivanova is a gifted choreographer and researcher of the South Slavic folk dance culture. She has degrees in philosophy, literature and cultural studies from the Institute of Music and Choreography in Sofia, Bulgaria, and from the Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski.
Ivanova was a fulltime teacher in choreography and co-founder of the Medena Pitka school ensemble. She was artistic director of the Tropanka folk dance group (New Bulgarian University), choreographer of the Zornitza University students' folk ensemble, and a choreographer of student ensembles in Bulgaria, Banat and Besarabia. With these ensembles she toured France, Israel, Romania, Malta, Belgium, the Netherlands, Slovakia and Mongolia.
"Her talent as an artist helps Daniela Ivanova to be a very good educator as well," said JIF member Bruce Botelho. "Her fine singing and very charming personality make her workshops more fun than work."
