JDHS wrestlers post 3-1 mark on Ketchikan trip

Posted: Monday, January 17, 2005

The Juneau-Douglas High School wrestling team left half its squad at home, but the Crimson Bears still posted a 3-1 record in a two-day series of triple-dual meets with Ketchikan and Sitka this weekend at Ketchikan High School's Clarke Cochrane Gymnasium.

The Crimson Bears left all of their lighter wrestlers home, which meant Juneau was missing four wrestlers ranked among the state's best in the bottom three weight classes. But the heavier wrestlers were able to compensate for the forfeits, which also included another open slot at 135 pounds.

Even though Juneau spotted as many as 24 points to its opponents because of the forfeits, the Crimson Bears were able to pull out victories in all but one of their dual meets. However, due to some scorekeeping errors Juneau coach Kris Mercer thought the Bears went 1-3 on the trip.

"We took a couple of losses today and one yesterday, but we left half the team at home," Mercer said Saturday night, before the errors were found. "All my little guys stayed home to catch up on their schoolwork. We've been on the road so much this season, and it's the end of the term, so they needed to get caught up to stay eligible for regions and state."

In Saturday's matches, Juneau edged Sitka 39-37 and lost to Ketchikan 29-21, while Sitka beat Ketchikan 43-36 in the other dual meet of the day. On Friday, Juneau beat Sitka 37-31 and beat Ketchikan 37-25, while Sitka beat Ketchikan 52-30.

In the Sitka match on Saturday, the score originally was listed as 43-33 for the Wolves. But Sitka was incorrectly given six points after it forfeited at 275 pounds and the score went to 39-37 when the points were given back to Juneau. In the Sitka match on Friday, Mercer thought the score was in favor of Sitka but a review of the scoresheet showed Juneau winning (Saturday's Ketchikan Daily News also reported Juneau winning).

"There were lots of forfeits, and there were not enough wrestlers to fill all the weight classes," Mercer said. "We took a break from dieting this week and bumped up some guys in weight class."

In Saturday's loss to Ketchikan, which was the first victory of the season for the Kings against a Southeast Class 4A team, one of the match highlights was when Juneau 215-pounder Jake Ritter moved up to 275 pounds and lost a 5-4 decision to two-time defending state champion Jon Hamilton. Ritter is ranked fourth in the state at 215 according to AlaskaWrestling.com, while Hamilton is No. 1 at 275. Mercer said Hamilton got Ritter into a near-fall in the second period, but Ritter came back and got two takedowns in the third period.

Another highlight of that match was freshman Phillip Moser moving up to 160 pounds and dropping a 3-1 decision to second-ranked Iain Brown. Also, at 152 pounds, Ketchikan's Kenneth Davis needed double overtime to beat Garret Cox 2-1.

In Saturday's victory over Sitka, one of the highlights for Juneau came when John Kuterbach - ranked No. 2 at 171 pounds - moved up to 189 and pinned third-ranked Jake LaDuke in 3 minutes, 49 seconds. Kuterbach also beat LaDuke in Friday's match, but that time it was by a 12-9 decision.

"John is wrestling real tough, and he's just getting his due after a couple of hard years," Mercer said of Kuterbach. "I point him out to my freshmen who might be struggling a bit, to show what happens if you keep with it."

In other highlights, Juneau junior Cody Wolf - ranked No. 5 at 130 pounds - twice won decisions over Sitka's Jim Jurczak, who is ranked No. 5 at 125 pounds and moved up a weight. Wolf won 11-4 on Friday and 6-3 on Saturday.

The Crimson Bears will be at home this weekend for just the second time this season. Juneau hosts Sitka on Friday night for a dual meet, then hosts Ketchikan and Sitka for dual meets on Saturday. The meet times are still being arranged as the visiting teams try to work their travel plans around finals week.
