Steam and ash billow from Mount Augustine volcano Tuesday 75 miles southeast of Homer. The mountain erupted Tuesday morning, sending an ash plume 812 miles up, officials at the Alaska Volcano Observatory said. Tuesday's eruption was preceded by increased seismic activity at the volcano, located on an uninhabited island about 180 miles southwest of Anchorage.
