JUNEAU - Eaglecrest Ski Area closed its new chairlift Sunday for the second time since it opened to the public last month.
The lift, called Black Bear, will not operate today, ski area management said Sunday night in a statement.
Management said the shaft that cracked in half three weeks ago had broken again.
The problem was discovered Sunday afternoon, just 60 hours after the lift was put back in operation.
"We appear to have a fundamental problem that we cannot isolate, possibly an alignment issue," ski area General Manager Kirk Duncan said in the statement.
It appears the ski area needs specialized tools to figure out the alignment problem, he added.
"We have a new shaft being milled at this time and will use this week to determine the best method for aligning the shaft," he said.
Duncan said the continued maintenance issues are stressful for the staff and apologized for the inconvenience to local skiers.
The area's other lifts will operate on schedule today. Black Bear maintenance updates will be posted at skijuneau.com.
