Soroptimists get grant for AWARE

Soroptimist International of Juneau, a volunteer service organization for business and professional women, was one of 43 Soroptimist clubs to receive a grant from the Soroptimist Foundation, headquartered in Philadelphia. About $250,000 was awarded in sums varying from $1,000 to $10,000 for programs that benefit women.

The Juneau organization received a $1,000 grant to assist domestic violence and sexual assault victims assisted by the AWARE shelter.

The shelter was given a supply of the publication ``Getting Free'' - a primer for getting out of abusive situations - as well as sweatsuits and basic toiletry items for AWARE residents who have had to flee without taking anything with them.
