Disappointment in Juneau

Posted: Sunday, January 19, 2003

The attendance at the presentation by Professor Ross Klein on cruise ship tourism in the Assembly Chambers on Thursday, Jan. 16 was a genuine disappointment to me.

The Assembly has funded studies, has listened to reports on the results, has assigned the reports to special groups for further analysis, and has not approved a tourism management plan yet.

Last night, yet another consultant came to Juneau to present more information. This one did not cost the city a cent! Yet, the Assembly members and the representatives of the cruise ship industry did not attend.

We need each other - Juneau needs tourism and the tour industry needs Juneau. Let's try to communicate our differing perspectives and develop a plan for this important part of Juneau's economy.
