Drake University freshman basketball player Chris Bryant, a 2004 graduate of Metlakatla High School, was named the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week on Monday.
Bryant, a 6-foot-3 guard, averaged 23.5 points in two games last week while shooting more than 57 percent - 8-for-14 - from 3-point range for the Bulldogs, an NCAA Division I school in Des Moines, Iowa.
He scored a career-high 26 points in just 23 minutes of play in a 91-80 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Jan. 10, including 5-for-7 shooting from 3-point range and 7-for-7 shooting from the free-throw line. On two occasions, he sank three free throws in a row after being fouled behind the 3-point line.
According to the Des Moines Register, Bryant's 26-point performance was the fifth-best by a Drake freshman in school history.
Bryant scored 21 points and had a season-high five rebounds in 24 minutes of play in last Saturday's 74-61 loss at Illinois State. The Bulldogs take a 6-8 season record into tonight's conference game against Creighton.
Last season, Bryant led Metlakatla to the Region V-Class 3A title, a win over Ketchikan in the Region V-Class 3A/4A crossover game, and a fifth-place finish at the state tournament.
A story in the Des Moines Register after the Jan. 10 win reported that Bryant's teammates have given him two nicknames in honor of his outside shot: the "Alaska Assassin" and the "Metlakatla Marksman."
