Eaglecrest Ski Area - 24th Annual Learn to Ski Weekend - The Eaglecrest Snowsports School will host the 24th Annual Learn to Ski Weekend on Jan. 29-30. The event is for children in grades 3-5 who have never skied before, and the 45 participants will be selected in a drawing. Application forms are due to the Eaglecrest business office or to an elementary school office by 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 25. Forms are available at all elementary schools, Foggy Mountain Shop, Nugget Alaskan Outfitter, Play-it-Again Sports, the Eaglecrest business office and at the ski area. Juneau-Douglas High School wrestling - The Crimson Bears will host their last home events of the season - a series of dual meets against region rivals Sitka and Ketchikan - at the Juneau-Douglas High School main gym. Juneau wrestles Sitka at 8 p.m. on Friday, provided Sitka's plane makes it to town on time (Ketchikan is idle). On Saturday, Sitka wrestles Ketchikan at 10 a.m., Juneau wrestles Ketchikan at 1 p.m., and Juneau wrestles Sitka at 3 p.m., with the last meet honoring Juneau's seniors.

Raincountry Flyfishers fly tying meeting - Meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 20, at the Mendenhall River School library. Bob Moultrie will demonstrate two flies - a fry imitation and a general attractor pattern for local Dolly Varden, cutthroat trout and coho salmon. The public is invited and materials are provided. Alaska Department of Fish & Game hunter education instructor training - A training course for volunteer hunter education instructors will be held on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 21-22, at the indoor shooting range on Montana Creek Road. Classes will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Jan. 21 and from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Jan. 22. Those interested in taking the course are required to complete a background check with the Alaska State Troopers before starting. The checks can be completed, with two forms of identification required (one with picture), at 2760 Sherwood Lane or 450 Whittier Street on weekdays from 8 a.m.-noon or 1-4 p.m. The $20 fee will be reimbursed. Indoor shooting range closure - The indoor shooting range on Montana Creek Road will be closed to the public on Saturday, Jan. 21, until 3 p.m. due to hunter education instructor training.
Indoor shooting range public shooting hours changing - The Alaska Department of Fish & Game's Hunter Education Facility and Indoor Shooting Range on Montana Creek Road will be changing its public shooting hours, starting the week of Jan. 23. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - New climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee.
