State employees association is a Mickey Mouse club

Posted: Sunday, January 20, 2008

Michael Lavering, in his Juneau Empire letter, "State workers should take back the union," on Jan. 13, has once again pointed out the obvious to General Government Workers. Unfortunately, without also clearing the decks of current staff nothing will change.

The whole organization is a Mickey Mouse enterprise. Remember the Mickey Mouse Club? Launched by Walt Disney in 1955 to help finance construction of the Disneyland Theme Park in California, the Mickey Mouse Club was a variety show featuring an array of bad actors. The show ran until 1959 when it was canceled.

Efforts were made to revive this goof-ball show in the late 1970s, and again in the late 1990s, but it failed again and again. Most memorable from the show was the singing of the "Mickey Mouse March."

Every member of the Alaska State Employees Association, AFSCME Local 52, is required to pay for the Mickey Mouse Club he or she belongs to as a general government worker. Perhaps those who have had enough of this spectacle should start singing together the Mickey Mouse March at any union meetings run by the association.
