Ptarmigan chairlift shut down after electrical system fails

Posted: Wednesday, January 20, 2010

JUNEAU - Eaglecrest's Ptarmigan chairlift shut down for about 45 minutes Monday morning after a braking system necessary for electric power "destroyed itself," Eaglecrest General Manager Kirk Duncan said. The lift went back online via diesel around 9:45 p.m. "We are able to operate with all of the other braking systems totally functional," Duncan said.

Eaglecrest has ordered a new brake from Spokane, Wash., and staff plan to install it Thursday, Duncan said. The lift will operate via diesel during the installation; he expects it to be back up to speed on Friday.

Duncan said he won't know when Black Bear chairlift, which shut down after a part broke for second time since the lift opened in December, will be open until later in the week. He said the ski area has contacted "local experts" to help them align the shaft correctly in hopes it will not break again.
