Juneau girls improve to 7-1 with two wins

Posted: Sunday, January 21, 2001

The Juneau-Douglas High School girls basketball team came away from its Region V-Class 4A season-openers in Sitka with two wins, winning 45-31 on Friday and 42-30 Saturday night.

The Crimson Bears (7-1, 2-0) claimed victory early on Friday's game by starting fast and then playing good defense to hold off the Wolves.

Juneau jumped out to a 16-4 first quarter lead and did not allow a field goal by Sitka (7-5, 0-4) until midway through the second quarter when Sitka's Breanne Erickson hit a basket three minutes in.

"Juneau came out hard," Sitka coach Rich Krupa said. "We played man-to-man defense and they ran us around the court. It was good Southeast basketball."

Juneau led 25-12 at the halfway point and managed to keep its distance from the Wolves, who stormed back to come within six points before Juneau put the game out of reach in the final minutes.

"We stepped it up in the second half," Krupa said. "But Juneau is just a good, fundamentally sound basketball team and we couldn't catch up."

The Crimson Bears were led in scoring by Danielle Larson with nine points followed by Hilary Rehfeld with eight points. Amy Neussl and Michael Kohan each scored six and Courtney Mason and Anna Cappaci added four points apiece to lead the Bears' balanced scoring attack.

Sitka was led in scoring by Erickson with 15 while Sidney Wyman added seven in a losing effort for the Wolves.

As of press time today, no box score was received for Saturday's game and coach Hamey could not be reached for comment after the game. Results and highlights will appear in the Juneau Empire's Monday issue.

Juneau will travel to Chugiak on Thursday to play the Mustangs and then competes in the East T-Bird Classic against East Anchorage, Wasilla and Bartlett on Jan. 25-27.
