Sixth-grader Cole Carnahan of Harborview realizes his mistake spelling the word "mistletoe" during Thursday evening's spelling bee at Mendenhall River Community School. Fifth-grader Marlena Sloss, right, won the contest with her final two words: "sinew" and "bribery". Seventeen contestants from grades three through eight competed in the event. Sloss will now compete in the state competition next month in Anchorage.
