Juneau String Ensembles will perform their annual Chamber Music Night concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at Northern LIght United Church.
The evening of music will include performances by Ursa Major Ensemble, the Juneau Suzuki Violin Group, Stringin in the Rain Quartet, Encore String Quartet and the All-state Group. Selections will include pieces by Shubert, Bach, Mozart and Brahms.
All ensembles will be led by music director Guohua Xia. A native of Shanghai, Xia came to Juneau from Fairbanks with the intent to teach young string players, and co-founded JSE. He has studied Suzuki string teaching methods in Alaska and Oregon, and is a regular performer with the Juneau Symphony.
Since 1994 JSE has grown to encompass three ensembles: Ursa Major, Aurora Strings and Ursa Minor; and several quartets: Sixteen Strings, Encore Strings, and Stringin' in the Rain. Each group is made up of players of similar ability who perform regularly for the community in schools, hospitals, nursing homes, museums, and the Glory Hole, Rotary Club, and Concerts in the Park. Two of the ensembles have toured China, performing in Beijing and Shanghai with the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra.
Xia conducts all the ensembles and quartets, provides musical direction, teaches musical theory and skills, and organizes performances and concerts.
Tickets for Saturday's show are available from Juneau String Ensemble students and parents and at the door.
Juneau String Ensembles is funded in part by the City & Borough of Juneau through a grant from the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council.
