January 2007 Events at Eaglecrest - It's not too late to sign up for the Juneau Ski Club's "Mighty Mites" program. Young skiers ages 7 to 12 get an introduction to ski racing in small groups with Eaglecrest instructors, with the objectives of learning to ski and having fun. Program choices are from 9:30 a.m. until noon on Saturdays or Sundays, or all day Saturdays - runs until mid-March. More information and registration forms available at www.juneauskiracing.org. Tornados Youth Wrestling Club registration - The Juneau Tornados Youth Wrestling Club registration is now though Feb. 28. Tornados wrestling is for boys and girls ages 5-18 interested in learning wrestling skills. Practice for ages 5-12 will begin Jan. 8. Wrestlers 13-and-older should contact coach Bob Koenitzer for times. Adult wrestlers and coaches are welcome and encouraged to participate. The sports of wrestling teaches youth teammwork, goal-setting and self control, as well as promoting physical fitness in a fun and structured environment. Practices will be Monday-Wednesday 6:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. for ages 5-12 and 7:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. for older wrestlers. Registration fee is $65. Info: Bob, 789-0874 or Lee, 723-2879.
Juneau Youth Hockey second season - Juneau Douglas Ice Association youth hockey is opening registration for the second season. The season runs from January to March for the following ages: Mites, 5-8 years old (birth years 1998-2002) and intro to hockey, 4-and-older who are first time players. Co-ed Master's Indoor Soccer Sunday - The Co-Ed Master's Soccer Sundays is for experienced men and women soccer players over the age of 30. There will be no formal teams and no referees. Start Smart Basketball Program - The Start Smart Basketball Program is for boys and girls ages 4-5. It helps develop the basic motor skills necessary to play organized basketball while they work one-on-one and spend quality time with their parents. The program focuses on teaching children and their parents skills in dribbling/ball handling, passing/catching, shooting and running/agility without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. The program is held once a week for six weeks with the exercises becoming increasingly more difficult as the classes progress and the children improve. The sessions will be held weekly on Wednesday, Jan. 17 through Feb. 21, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Mendenhall River School Gym. Open Badminton Gym - There will be open badminton at Auke Bay School from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays. All skill levels are encouraged to attend. Bring a racquet if you have one. Birdies will be provided. Cost is $3 per person. Info: Theresa, 790-2499.

Mt. Jumbo Gym Preschool Open Gym - The Mt. Jumbo Preschool Open Gym is open to the public on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to noon for all children ages 1-6. Children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at a maximum ration of four children to one adult. Play equipment and tumbling mats are provided. There is a $1 per child cost for the program. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Evening masters swimming program - The Augustus Brown pool hosts a twice-weekly evening masters swimming program. The program will meet from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and is designed to promote and improve the physical and mental well-being of adults age 19-older. Basketball/volleyball court rentals available - The Juneau Community Schools program has basketball/volleyball court rental times available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. The cost to rent the court is $20 per hour, which must be paid at the time of rental. This is for adult activities only. Info: Juneau Community Schools, 463-1717.
Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
