FAIRBANKS - Three rocket launches are planned this month from the Poker Flat Research Range, north of Fairbanks.
The first is scheduled Jan. 27, according to the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
Charles Carlson, a researcher from the University of California, is leading a team of scientists that will launch a Black Brant XII sounding rocket during auroral activity to study particle acceleration and plasma wave generation.
A day later, weather permitting, UAF students are scheduled to launch an Orion sounding rocket of their own making.
And on Jan. 30 two Canadian scientists are scheduled to send up a Black Brant XII designed to measure thermal particles in the aurora borealis, the Geophysical Institute said in a news release.
