Title and firm: Alex Majewski, owner and practitioner at Acupressure Institute of Alaska.
Services: The company offers acupressure, craniosacral therapy, somato-emotional release, massage therapy and chiropractic services. The institute also offers classes in acupressure and massage.
Biographical information: Majewski stumbled into his career in 1977 when he sought a second opinion that was "180 degrees" from that of his orthopedic surgeon. Acupressure is the ancient Chinese art of maintaining balance of energy flow throughout the body by way of pressure points along energy meridians.
"I wanted to know what they knew about knees," he said.
At the time, he lived in Santa Monica, Calif., only a few blocks away from the Acupressure Workshop, one of the first acupressure schools in the country and where the Jin Shin Do acupressure method he now practices was developed. The opinion led to treatment that led to him learning about acupressure to treat himself. As an arts administrator, he started working on dancers and musicians, and slowly acupressure started taking over his working life.
"I never imagined a career change like this," he said.
Majewski said he believes acupressure isn't a replacement for Western-style medicine, but is complementary. While Western medicine treats problems, acupressure helps the person's body heal itself quicker, he said.
Majewski also has an office in Sitka. He said he travels to Sitka about five days a month but is trying to find a way to not travel as much.
After 23 years in the field, the driving force in his career is helping people.
"People getting better - there's nothing like it," Majewski said. "It's so gratifying."
Family: Majewski, 50, is married to Jeanette and they have one son, Zak, who is attending chef school in Seattle.
Quotable: "People (in Alaska) are individualistic. People are willing to try different ways to get better."
Employees: He has one full-time apprentice and a part-time employee plus several practitioners who operate out of his office on a contract basis.
Contact: The office at 119 Second St. is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. by appointment. The phone number is 463-5560.
