What does pro-choice really mean? The anti-life people say pro-choice means that a woman can choose to have a child or not have a child after conception takes place. This certainly is a false statement because once conception takes place; a woman already has a child, an unborn child.
Jan. 22 has come and gone again and we sadly are reminded that Roe v. Wade is still in effect. Many babies have died because of this decision. This decision did not interpret any existing law; it made the law.
When does life begin? When did our life begin? Our life began at conception. Modern medicine has verified this for us. At conception it is determined if the person is male or female, if the person will grow to be tall or short, what color the hair will be, etc. Once we are conceived, we are unique human beings. We may live just a few minutes or until we are quiet elderly. It does not matter what stage of life we are at: Unborn, infant, toddler, pre-school age, elementary school age, teen-ager, adult, middle age or elderly; our life has worth and value. It does not matter if we are physically or mentally handicapped; our life has worth and value.
I am distressed to read the articles in My Turn on Jan. 18, by Shannon O'Fallon, and Jan. 19 by Alexis Ross Miller. These two women write as if they are not aware of the medical fact that life begins at conception. However, I am sure they are aware of this fact since they are educated women. Can they possible believe that life has no worth or value if you are not wanted? They say they are pro-choice so this is what they must believe.
What does pro-choice really mean? The anti-life people say pro-choice means that a woman can choose to have a child or not have a child after conception takes place. This certainly is a false statement because once conception takes place; a woman already has a child, an unborn child. The only thing that is needed then is time for that child to mature into an infant and be born. Therefore, pro-choice really means a choice as to whether or not to let the unborn child live.
We in the pro-life moment who support life from conception onwards are not extremists. We are moral and civil-minded people interested in protecting the life of the unborn and the elderly. The two extreme stages of our life and the most vulnerable are the unborn and the elderly stage. The purpose of Alaskans For Life Inc. and other pro-life groups is to educate and convince the public that life during these two stages has inherent value. Above all we in the pro-life movement recognized that God is the author of all life; therefore life is sacred.
